THE JEFFERSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY AT WORK DOWNTOWN

Founded in 1995 with 158 charter members, the Jefferson County Historical Society is hard at work Downtown fulfilling its Mission of preserving the heritage of Jefferson County.  The Society hosts monthly programs from September through June, including a special annual Black History Month presentation every February.  In addition, under the guidance of president Leroy Lewis, the Society operates a museum and library of local and family history and a growing archive of county historical records and makes fascinating historical publications available to the public.  Visit the Society on Broad Street for an in-depth look at the history of Downtown and Jefferson County as a whole, or Contact Society president Leroy Lewis for more information.
THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S MISSION

"The mission of the Jefferson County Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share the history of Jefferson County.  Among the most significant ways in which the Society fulfills this mission is by collecting, receiving, and preserving letters, documents, photographs, artwork, books, records, artifacts, and memorabilia pertaining to the purpose of this Society; maintaining an archives building for the better preservation of its collection; and by creating and maintaining an historical library of local and family history for the use of its members and others of the general public under such rules and regulations for the use of the collection."
