| Friends of Historic Downtown Louisville kicked off its first year
in January 2005 with a new program to honor Downtown's
historic buildings with handsome brass plaques. The Plaque
Program aims to boost recognition of the fine old
buildings that make up the Louisville Commercial Historic District.
Friends collaborated with well-known plaque artisans
Erie Landmark Company to
develop a design unique to Downtown -- complete with the
Old Market
logo! |
|
 |
| Currently you can see the actual plaques at four
locations Downtown -- |
|
New plaques will be mounted Johnson's Dry Cleaners,
Louisville Drug, the old Clarke Bros. Hardware, and The Pal
Theater during summer 2006. |
| WHAT BUILDINGS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR PLAQUES? |
| The
Louisville Commercial Historic District was established by the
U.S. Secretary of the
Interior in 1994. At at that time "contributing
structures" within the District came to be listed on the
National Register of Historic
Places. The District consists of 41 buildings located in
the area surrounding Broad Street between Peachtree and Screven
Streets, including parts of Walnut, Mulberry, and Green Streets.
Any of these contributing structures are eligible to participate in
the Plaque Program. Building owners can easily determine
whether their buildings are eligible by consulting with the
Jefferson County
Historical Society. |
| HOW CAN YOU OBTAIN A PLAQUE FOR YOUR BUILDING? |
| Simple!
Contact Friends! Working together with the
Jefferson County Historical Society, we'll walk you through the
process of -- |
- Determining whether your building qualifies
- Researching the original name and date of construction of
your building
- Ordering your customized plaque from
Erie Landmark Company.
|
| Altogether, including shipping, the cost of your plaque will be
approximately $150 -- a small price to help your historic building
achieve the attention it deserves! |
